Choose a modular structure when phased growth, component replacement, reconfiguration or possible relocation has high business value. Choose a more fixed, custom-integrated structure when the venue depends on landmark theming, exact architectural integration or attraction geometry that cannot be assembled from repeatable bays. Many successful projects combine both.
Modular describes a system organized around repeatable frame bays, standardized interfaces and replaceable play components. It does not mean temporary, unanchored or exempt from engineering and safety requirements.
Fixed, or custom-integrated, describes a system designed around a particular venue, architecture or sculpted theme, often with project-specific geometry, finishes and interfaces. It does not mean the equipment can never be repaired or altered.
Ask bidders to define these terms in their proposal; the industry does not use them consistently.

A modular layout built for future growth reserves specific things now, not just an empty rectangle: the structural and interface points where a future bay will attach, the circulation and accessible route that has to keep working once it is added, exit and fire-system capacity for the larger occupant load, power and data provisions, and equipment and installation access to the future zone. An "expansion-ready" claim should be backed by drawings. Leaving open floor space is not enough if exits, utilities, structure or delivery access cannot support the future phase.
Modular design can reduce redesign and replacement effort, but it is not automatically cheaper. High-quality repeatable systems still use commercial materials, tested interfaces, protective components and project-specific anchorage. A fixed signature feature may cost more initially but create greater visual differentiation.
Compare total lifecycle scope, not just the initial quote: initial design and equipment, freight and packing efficiency, installation and supervision, spare-parts strategy, reconfiguration drawings and inspection, refurbishment of wear surfaces, de-installation and storage if relocating, and site repairs and new anchorage after any change.
Lefunland's published equipment-planning range of USD 10-15 per sq ft is an early reference, not a rule for either construction type.
Lefunland publishes a soft-play baseline of 48 mm x 2.2 mm galvanized steel, 80+ micron powder coating, 80-density EVA and 0.45 mm PVC. For modular systems, also compare connector design, module tolerances, anti-loosening details, padding at joints, net terminations and part-number continuity. For fixed systems, compare substrate, attachment, access panels, finish repairability and replacement molds or files.
Material quality does not remove the need for inspection. Interfaces and high-use transitions often deserve special maintenance attention.
A practical hybrid uses a modular steel and play framework with replaceable pads, nets and activities, then adds selective custom facades, sculptures, lighting or signature attractions. The design team should clearly separate structural and safety-critical parts from decorative or refreshable layers. Any reconfiguration still requires manufacturer review, updated drawings, competent installation and applicable inspection. Operators should never move modules independently simply because the system is described as modular.
Possibly, but a new site changes dimensions, clear height, exits, services, anchorage and applicable approvals. Treat relocation as a new engineering and design project.
Neither category is inherently safer. Safety depends on the complete design, materials, manufacturing, installation, operation, inspection and applicable standards.
Standardized, well-documented components may be easier to identify and reuse, but condition, compliance, dismantling cost and fit at the new site determine value.
